I was thinking about putting a small air tank on a tractor in order to get a short burst of power. Does anyone have any idea how I might hook it up on a gas tractor. manifold? before the carb?

Hey motorken, do you know of anyplace to find parts for those compressors? We need some valves for the compressor end.

The valves seem to be the needy part...I think Le Roi made engine-driven portable compressors until the 60's although most later ones were of the screw type. I have all kinds of literature and some of it mentions ingersol. WABCO is mentioned on some of the literature and I know Dresser did in fact buy LEROI at some point. Dresser became part of Halliburton/KBR. Le Roi had arrangements with Allis Chalmers since 1920 or earlier where they shared part/eng specs. The transmission on my Leroi is very similar if not identical to that of an Allis rc or wc. It has duals and an older allis 6-bolt pattern. E-mail me and I will be glad to help chase down some parts...

When you suddenly put a bunch of extra air into the intake stream, the fuel mixture will suddenly become lean. Lean is mean..... until it starts tearing stuff up. If you fatten the mixture up enough for the extra air under pressure, when you arent putting the air to it it will be really fat and smoke and slobber all over itself.

Sounds simple, but actually very complex. First step is to calculate CFM of engine at pulling rpm which will essentially be the last few yards of track assuming no spinout. To create the positive atmospheric pressure we seek will require a 1-way valve either before or after the air cleaner. Assuming we can do this, then we must also have the capacity to supply all the CFM the engine will need to run those last few feet. This assumes we are really trying to create a positive net intake force as in a blower or turbo. I'm sure that at least a net zero atmosphere could be obtained which would eliminate the loss of pressure due to flow restrictions of the oil bath...The carb issue seems fairly minor and could be addressed to some degree by adjusting Hi/Lo mix and altering jets, nozzles etc. I put a K&N on my deere 830 to help it breathe...not sure if it really helps, but looks cool...lol

Also since the Le Roi engine is essentially an Allis WD-45 with flat tops and combustion heads, it would probably benefit from some of the lower compression dish pistons from an early allis wd 45. Will the WC rear end hold up?

Check out www.tractair.com. I have a 105 with 6-cyl engine. front 4 are engine, rear 2 compressor. Engine is 226 Le Roi similar to 4x4.5 allis wd-45. tractor is a 48 model and air tank/compressor are factory equipment so who could complain about me running a hose to intake side of carb for a last snort down the track?
