depends on the alcohol. according to ford, ethanol is 9:1 fuel air ratio with 5% h/p gain over gas, and methanol is a 6.35:1 fuel/air ratio with a 4% hp gain. both are supposed to be about 100 octane. ethanol mixes easy with gas, and is fairly lubericated. methanol is EXTREMELY corrosive, dry, and won't mix with gas without additives. around 12:1 compression ratio is GREAT with both.

I did some searches on Google and found a couple of articles written in the 60"s about converting a carberated car over to run on alcohal. I read them and basically concluded that you need more fuel (about 25 to 30% more), a hotter spark plug, advance the timing a bit, and run as much compression as you can.
I took what I learned and modified my MM U to run on E85. I drilled out my carb jet to allow for more fuel, bent my float a fit (as E85 changes how the float acts in the carb), advanced my timing just a bit, move up a heat range on my plugs and..... she fired right up and runs like a champ. Don"t know what will eventully happen, but it is just something to try....for fun! The old U is wore out anyway, so I figured that I couldn"t hurt too much.
So far so good, and is just a topic at shows etc that I run it on E85.
It is interesting in the aritcles that the Model T was made to be a flex fuel vehicle, gas or ethanol. just turn a knob and it "engaged" the choke a little bit (more fuel/less air).

Alcohol loves compression. Lots of it.
