A friend wants to let his son pull his 60 this summer, but wants to keep the build cost under control...
This is a "Gas" 60...
What is the "best" way yo increase compression.?
How much can I lengthen the rods without getting in trouble with sparkplug interference with flame travel (with the original pistons)..??
What aircraft engine pistons would be appropriate, and where would I look for them..??
He really doesent want to bore the block, so increased compression and RPM will have to do.
I will do the valve and port work, along with combustion cahamber polishingand valve reshaping.
Question....
At 1,250 RPM, will removing the divider between the intake runners just aft of the carb improve Horsepower..??
I know it can't "Duke it out" at low RPM, so it will have to operate on a higher power band to compete..
What would be the odds of installing over-head sparkplugs, as I have seen on Early model "A" pullers..?? I would think 7.5 or 8.0 to one would be a fair ratio.
Thanks for any and all information..!!
Ron..

I think you're going way overboard for a 1st. time puller.(If pulling in a stock class.) On a "gas" 60 a good tune-up, weigh placement and tire air pressure will go along way. After a few pulls you will have a base line of info to help with the build up.(if needed, for stock pulling.)

It is sometimes hard to tell what competition you will meet at a "Stock Pull"...!!

We had to pull my friend's JD "R" (45HP) against 400+ HP Tractors, in the "County Pull" at Morrow County, last year..!!

I guess we will just mill .030" off the head and do a real good valve job on it and leave it at that...!!! Thanks for all the Great advice...!!! Ron..

Well, I would agree with you, but there are some seals leaking on the governors and the radiator needs repair..He has already pulled the hood, etc and the head has to come off, to ever get the exhaust gaskets to seal, it has to be machined.. Rather than machine the head a great amount, I think it would be better to get the pistons up , for more compression and turbulence... SO....it is only "natural" to get a little done now..!!! Thanks..!! Ron..
