Well, after a long search, this is the block I chose to build up my old farmall H. Clean aint it??? Im still wrestling the 4 remaining head studs that do not want to part company just yet,, Before I have the block bored, Im gonna do the clearence work for the stroker assembly, bore it to within a few thousandths, hard block it, and finish the bores up from there. The water jackets have been cleaned out, No flake rust anywhere to be seen,,, but there is always the chance of a pin hole at the bottom of the bore,,,, So with the hard block not installed yet, it makes easier repair for a sleeve if that case was to happen. Taking H blocks out to the limit, (3-13/16 bore) can be done without sleeved repairs, but it takes a really good block. At this bore, Im still able to use a IH 350 head gasket and not have any worries. Ive always used a copper gasket on this type of engine, and I felt that the block deck is not strong enough to withstand the added stress that running a copper gasket goes with. Over time, heads and blocks flex and with the copper gasket as tight as it was, it leads to stress cracks at the water ports of the block to the bore,,, a big problem for blocks that have sleeves pressed in,,, theres nothing left to help hold the block deck together around the sleeves. Less prone to crack with still running the on the original block. its all still one piece,,, so less chance of block deck flex when tightning the head bolts down. I had built a simular block last year,,, put it in another H,, and held very well, so Im confident that this block will as reliable and hold water!! I made up a new set of rods, with this rod style, I wont have to cut nowhere near as much out of the block as I once had to years ago to clear the stroke. The head is a toss up still,,, I still have the milled, ported 8043DC head I ran for years,,, but Ive got 2 other cyl heads Im thinking of,,, a 350 head, and a kerosine head. This engine is capable of making 285 psi at cranking speed,,, thats even with a cam with a large overlap!! So im gonna see what lower compression will do as well. I have 2 cams Im going to test out,,, one will be a stock 350 cam, and another is from a very experienced Ih builder, which, when I bought it all those years ago when they were available, has been the best Ive seen. The reason being for 2 cams is to try to tune in the changes from the low compression head,,,, I cant wait to see the dyno results. So,,, not too far off till I get my 40 H back on its wheels and ready to run. New years resolutions I mentioned before a while back,,,, So if you got a H,,, Ill keep up info on what I am doing with it, For some reason i have chosen to record this engine's build up. Maybe its for my memory,,, LOL,, or maybe,, just maybe,, this H will be the one to beat at a pull near YOU! ChadS

More like "Pro Stock, and Super Pro Stock" for this tractor. It knows where home is. Chad

Hey ChadS. Glad to see you posting progress of some of the work you are doing. You said you made some new rods. How did you do that? Dis you make them yourself or did you get them made?

Awhile back in one of your post you mentioned you had some pictures of a 4" 350 or 300 block clearanced and everything. Would you mind sending them to me to take a look at?

Cheers!

Sid

Good to hear from you Sid! I made up a new set, well new to me, old to the industry. Thats the beauty of this engine, it uses stock rods. I reconditioned them, and shaved them down using a large belt/disk sander. The sander is not a hand held unit,, so dont get confused. The stroke Im using in this engine is as big as you can go using the stock H rods. The old rods,,, they were fine, but I used a hand grinder on them many years ago to shape them, a little ratty looking,,, so I smoothed out a new set. Im also gonna use a digital scale to get them weighing close to the same weight. On the big bore 350 block,,, It has been bored beyond its limits and has had thick sleeves pressed down into it. Unfortunatly,, that block would have to be a waterless block, the deck of the block, is severly weakened, and the sleeves would have to be brazed or welded in to the block so it regains some strength. I did not want a block like this,,, not that it would not work,, its that Id have to pull it to the line, pull it, hope it dont overheat and crack the head, pull it off the line, etc etc. I dont have that kind of time at the tracks,,, being in so many classes and the time it takes to get reweighted inbetween classes,, hope that its cool enough to run again,,,,, The time frame at our usual pulls is a fast paced pull, and they dont wait,, anymore,,, So its got a H block, H parts numbers with water. For what Ive done on the bore size,, you can do the same to a 350 block still run water with no troubles, just have to install a custom ring in the block deck to seal off the sleeve flanges left over. Its a thicker block at the bottom of the bores, and may be less to have to hard block it at this bore. On the clearence work, I plan to show as I go along when I clearence the block in the photos above. I ll have a picture of the rods by the end of the day. Chad

Picture of the rods and rod caps for farmall H set up for a stroker. Countersunk rod bolts for more block clearence. it takes a belt sander and a mill to do what you see now. Chad

Chad -
I talked with Ed at C and P Machine in Ft. Wayne last week (crank place you had recommended in another thread). I mentioned that you had given me his information and WHOOOOO AAAAA, that turned out to be a mistake. Apparently, you still owe him for a stroker crank that was never picked up. Long story short, I think that he was trying to get me to pay for your crank as he wanted DOUBLE what I could get the same crank done at multiple other places.

You should probably give him a call. It's not too late to make amends, although it is too late to get your crank back. He said that he sold it on eBAY!!!

Yeah, that was one that Dad had sent up there,, like 4 years ago along with one other crank to do. He finished up one, paid when it was picked up, and the other wasn't finished at that time. 8 more months went by, Ed called Dad on the phone, and it was twice the price he had quoted on paper, I dont know what was said about it at the time,, other than C&P kept the crank. Thats been 3 years ago,, So,,, this is the first Ive heard on it since then. Other than Dad is out of a good crank core now since C&P sold it. 1800 for it was the bill and was quoted half that. Ill pass the info on to Dad, and see what he thinks,, Chad
