I'm looking for some info on using six cylinder HEI's (or any other type of electonic ignition) on my 460. I know it can be done. Just wondering what kind of problems I run into. thanks

Mopars as in dodge? What year and style of vehicle would i be looking for? Is everything within the dist or seperate like the fords? I've thought about the petronix kit, but I thought if i could get a dist at a junkyard for 15 bucks and make it work, I'd save alot. I'm just tired of messin with points. Do the truck dist work good at lower RPM's like 2500-3000? Thanks

Slant 6 Dodge,,,, If your burning points,, your voltage is too hot at the coil,,,,, try a smaller coil?? Id also say you need to look at the stop on the advance plate,,, you may need to file a little off the stop to get more travel out of the advance,,,,, Chad

I'm just using a stock napa coil. It's not that the points are burning up, it just seems like they never stay gapped right and so on. I just feel like an electronic ign. would be pretty much trouble free and will perform better. As for the advance, I running a 301 out of a 715. I've never even touched the advance. Tractor runs fine, just fouls plugs every now and then, usually inconvenient times. Thanks

Carbon buildup, usually very dark around the electrode. We take them out and clean them between every pull but we still lose one every once in a while. Does it with champions and AC's.

You can spend alot of money on parts to help,, Id look into pulling the head off it, oil pan and pull the pistons out. Most times, combine engines are in very very good shape,,, so a light hone and clean the cyls with marvel oil. Clean the crap out of the ring grooves, and theres alot of carbon hiding and the rings are usually shot as well. New rings, new rod bearings, or if they still look good, re use them if they look good. Alot of cleaning to do on these engines, dirt,, oil consumption, bad on the rings. The cyl head,,, the guides are usually half baked, new set will help reduce oil consumption by 20% !! Take the old intake gasket, center it with the bolts, The exhaust ports, trace the inside of the gasket to the head and with some patience, and a die grinder and a flapper wheel, or a roll pin with some 320 grit wrapped around the roll pin, in the die grinder,,,, Open up the exhuast ports, and do the same to the manifold. Intake ports, leave alone, Use rougher grit on them if you do polish them, rougher finish will help stir instead of puddle if it was a smooth surface. The tractor heads are restricted,, they are no where near to its potential in stock form. Open it up and let it breathe. The engine temp will be lower, it will rev up easier, lots more torque.

You wont have much in the rings and the gaskets,, the head is where the cost will be,, when you put in new guides, you best use new valves,,,,, 3 angle valve job,,, new seals. The port and polish work,, it can be money saved if you did it yourself, or knew someone thats done one before,, or find a ported head already to go,,, its the best recommondation,,, afterwards,, you wont have an engine that will nickle and dime you to death, and cost 20 feet when it sputters out. It will be a totally different animal,,,,, 110hp easy at 2500 rpms,,, rev em up with the right safety equpment, and there are alot of better parts aftermarket for flywheels, scatter blankets, shields, 150+ at 3500rpm,, if they let you run that fast,,, I read somewhere,, IH 6cyl gas engines,, were the engine, that outclassed them all back then,,, After building a little with my "460's" power plant,,, 200 hp,,, is not out of the question, with an engine exactly what you have sitting inbetween your frame rails,,,, the 301. They are powerhouses!! Just a little work to em,, they,, will surprize you. JMHO,, ChadS

Ive looked into that too. Probably have better luck wth a mopar distributor,, easier to remachine to fit. Hei's and fords' are so darn tall, and the tube is thin where you need it,, wouldnt be as strong if its bumped and jarred around. IH distributors can do the job,,,, On my 6 cyl, all I had done was cleaned it out, greased the weights with white lithium grease, put in a set of HEI advance springs. I still use points in it with an Accel super stock coil with a resistor. I still have a small scar on my hand when it lit me up like christmas tree this spring. You can add a petronix and really lite the fire,, just keep the resistor on the coil. Now a step up from that is to use a IH truck distributor,,,, they had a vacuum advance,, Rated for 3600 rpm from the factory, so the setup on those distributors were for high rpms,,, different calibration VS the tractor/combine distributors.
