As previously stated, protection. And it keeps the competition from walking past and tweeking the carb, pulling wires etc.

For the people that think side shields don't work just don't know. I was play pulling one sunday afternoon with several other people,I brought a tractor that I just recently purchased for my daughter. It was a bone stock wore smack out U Moline. I was going down the track when all of a sudden I seen my brother hit the dirt. The fan blade came apart and struck him. If it HAD NOT hit the side shield first I firmly believe it would have killed him. If you could have seen what it did to the shield,latches,hinges you will never have this discussion again. Just remember it only takes one serious injury to stop the fun for everyone.

USAP rules call for engine shields in mod 6mph and mod 8mph classes.(as safety equipment)

The same reason kids mount a spoiler on the deck lid of a car that never see's more than 70 mph.....same reason people put "SS 396" on the fender of a 307 Nova....same reason one puts 20 coats of clear on a paint job....same reason one puts 15" slicks on a 300 hp car...same reason one mounts a set of $1000 Mudders or Hogs on a truck with no front drive shaft...etc etc..you get the picture. Safety shield??? Don't even go there. The only good reason is for a place to put more decals.

Very correct , docjoe. I was beginning to think the cold was affecting the internet.Expected to get a few more hand slaps. Got to keep people's competitive instincts going during these winter months.(ha) ( Really don't think the shields are going to contain many rods or clutches tho).Happy pullin' to all!

Three years ago - MO State Fair - Dodge Arena - Ernie Conner - Gopher - USS - kicked a rod around 200ft - stopped in front of where we were sitting at 275ft - left side shield was hanging from one bolt - all the flying parts were contained by the safety shields and fell out the bottom - took the track crew 20 minutes to clean up the debris - safety shields work.

Ernies tractor was a 10,000 lb pro stock back then.He pulled alot with Outlaws.He has since rebuilt the Gopher as a limited pro and was out some last summer..He wrenches on Billy Millers Farmers Dream 966 IH pro stock and it lost an engine at the MO State fair pull last Aug.Parts were everywhere.

what class and how much rpm, I dont think many antiques running in the range of 1500 to 2500 are going to break apart and I have seen hundreds of tractors go down the track.

USS = Unlimited Super Stock

Big cubes, multi-stage turbocharged, lots of RPM.

I didn't say it broke apart, I said it kicked a rod - a billet steel rod the size of a man's forearm.

There are plenty of antiques running in the 1500-2500 rpm range that have tossed rods out the side. Stroker cranks, welded rods, no center main bearing... all good reasons to run safety shields.

well, this is just the nature of the sport. Yes the big machines can and do come apart, but in antique's side sheilds are not ever mentioned in any rules I have seen, they are for looks and to keep peoples fingers and eyes out, end of story.

In a world where "connecting rods" and "welded" are used in the same sentence, anything can happen.

Can"t forget that they hold back the pieces of engine when someone over-revs their tractor, and turns a pile of money into a pile of spare parts. I"ve seen what can happen when a drag racing engine comes apart and throws a piece of piston through the wall of the garage.
