Improved starting and throttle response and maybe a touch better fuel economy. You can also open up the plug gap and get a hotter spark.

You probably won't see a HP increase from it unless your present ignition is inadequate for increased compression or other engine modifications. What you will gain is better starting & improved reliability. I'm running Pertronix Ignitors in all my distributer equipped 2 cylinders and I swear by them. Like ben said buy the coil with them and don't forget the external resister. Most venders that sell these can advise you on what you need.

they work great. have used them on some super c farmalls. 4000 ford 860 ford . the one thing i suggest and when i install them is to ues new copper wires. but main thing get the coil with them. the coil is expencive but wll worth the cost. i havent tried one of yet in a 2-cly deere but would think it would work great

The Pertronics in nothing more than an electronic trigering device to take the place of contact points. They both do the same thing. They allow power to the coil for a period of time called "dwell" and then break the circuit allowing the electricity in the coil to "callapse" into the coil core and out to the plug for the spark. Everyone on here has said to make sure and get the hp coil and even new solid wires etc etc. This is where the extra "spark" and the extra "mileage" and the "quicker starting' is comming from. On a low rpm , low compression and long stroke JD 2cyl , accuracy of spark timing between elect. and points is not an issue. As far as maintenance goes , unless you are farming with this tractor , you will prabably never have to change points again anyway. Buy the coil and the wires and good plugs. Your points will do a fine job and you will still get the gains they talked about. The points do NOT carry spark plug voltage. They are just a switch. Manual instead of electronic. Oh , I forgot to tell you(and so did they) there is an electronic module in the pertronics that can and has gone bad and will really make you scratch your head trying to figure out why it won't run. Just another point of view. Do what you want. It's your money.
