Does anybody make a gear reduction starter for a JD "B"? If so, about how much do they cost, and where could I get one?

A high CCA 12V (800+ amp) battery connected to the stock 6V starter will crank most pulling tractor engines. Use large cables with soldered connections & connect the ground right to the starter case.

I'm Andrew's old man...He went up north for the weekend and can't respond to these posts. Instead of counting sheep at night, it's souped up JD B's instead...Man, I hope the money don't run out...Anyway, it's a '41 B with a 6-spd. tranny. By the looks of things, we both might be better off drinking muscle shakes and hitting the weight bench - doesn't look like there's a dime store way of getting around the starter issue.

Andrew, As G-man asked if your starter is located on top of the case and not the bottom I can help you as I have been through this myself. The gear reduction starters that most people are using for A's and G's will not work on your B because the location of the solenoid will interfere with the steering support post on the B. The starter that will work is off a B series Cummins diesel and has the solenoid in the right location that will allow it to bolt right on your B with out interference, that is if your starter is on TOP. If you go to a Cummins dealer for this starter they will want over 600.00 for a new one and around 350.00 for a rebuilt one plus core charges if you do not have a core. I found a supplier that I got two (new) not rebuilt ones for the last two B's that I built for around 250.00 a piece but that was about three years ago, probably higher now. I would give you a Delco part number but I do not have access to it right now. I can get it if you need it. Let me know. They are Delco gear reduction starters. Good Luck Dave W.

WTW, do you know what are the starters most are using are off of? I have one on my G but no one I've ever talked to has a sure answer. Most think it's off of a Power Stroke.

Justin I have purchased a Iska (solinoid burned out) and I purchased a Nippondenso starter.I just ask for a starter for a 4000 or 4020 John Deere. The Nippo I had to modidy crank case cover a little. These will fit "G"'s or any three bolt John Deere mounting bracket if you got the room they aren't gear reduction. Garland

The one I have is a gear reduction. The only modification I had to do was to the shround around the flywheel. Where the starter bolts to the bracket, it's thicker. That caused it to pull the shround back a little bit and it was rubbing the flywheel. I took a die grinder and ground the holes out a little bigger where the shroud bolts up and haven't had anymore problems. Those starters sure make a big difference.

Depending on what year your B is, a gear-reduction starter off of a later JD 8000 might fit it. If your starter is on top of the main case, I'm pretty sure it will - although not %100. It will fit on my G, at least, and the bolt pattern should be the same. Those starters are pretty high-dollar, though - probably in the $500 range for a new one. Maybe you can find one at a salvage yard. Just my two cents.
