The next pull im going to is going to be a gravel track with 3.5 mph limit with no rpm limit, ill pull the 5500 and 6500 classes, im wondering if i use 3rd gear will it be to fast? (ive never used it, only have used 1st,2nd and 4th gear)...any other tips on set up and technique when pulling on gravel would be great, as ive never done it before, and i have my doubts!thanks

A "normal" 88 will run 4.28 mph with either 13.6 x 38 or 15.5 x 38" rear tires at rated rpm (1650) per the Oliver manula that I just checked. At 2800 rpm you could be over 7 mph. A lot depends on the rear ratio. Five different ones were available. Then there a different transmission configurations.

I would bet 3rd is way too fast, unless you have the special tranny, and with an open rpm, you didnt say what size of tire, that would mean alot.

I always pull third gear in DIV III classes (10% over or 1925 RPM limit); Oliver 88 with 16.9 x 38"s cuts on 19" rims. I have no problem staying under the 3.5 mph, get her settled down before the decision cone at 50ft. RPM"s will be at or around 1500 - 1700 depending on tire slippage.

my tire size is 16.9x34, and im running about 2800 rpm, but sense ive never run on gravel, i wasnt sure if i would be slipping enough to make my 3rd gear move the sled the same speed as second on hard pack, just looking for some advice from some guys who have run on gravel.

A stock 3rd gear with 16.9x38's @2100rpm will run 6mph wide open.
