I am going to put the late model reduction gear nad clutch pulley gear in my 44 A.
The later model reduction gear assembly looks the same as the early A. Only a difference in amount of teeth. My question is can i just slide the late model assembly on the shaft, or do i need to take gear off spider and intalled late gear on early spider?

Thanks

Chad, on a few late A tractors made in 1950 they started using a keyed spider in the reduction gear instead of a splined one. Apparently this was not successful so they went back to the splined type. This is the only instance where you would need to press the gear off the spider. Mike

We did that on our 46' A. We got a late reduction gear and had the clutch pulley gear for the late A pressed off and pressed back on our clutch pulley. It made a little difference but not a big change.

How much of a difference did it make?
So you didn't have to remove gear off of reduction wheel.

The gear change will reduce your speed about 9.2 percent. The origional gears on your tractor should have 36 and 86 teeth. The late A gears will have 34 and 88 teeth, so do the math. Mike

Mike, I know that both pieces need to be changed.
Somebody told me that I had to change out the reduction gear hub(center piece that has tappered splines).
The late model and early model hubs look the same.
Can I just slide the 52 reduction gear asssembly in the shaft?

The reduction gear hubs should interchange on the shaft. There were a small range of reduction gears that were keyed to the shaft instead of having the tapered splines (648,000-657,392)so those obviously wouldn't directly interchange. Mike

I put a 1st reduction gear and the complete pully off of a 52A on a 49A slowed the tractor around 1/4mph but also gained a much better clutch.
