I run a JD A with H-L transmission, I have new 14.9-38 firestone 23 degrees on 12 inch pressed steel rims.
I pull 4500 and 5500 lbs classes. tractor speed is about 2.5-3.0 mph in first gear, don't have the power for second gear.
I have a draw bar that can be set 18 inches from center of axle to 25 inches. 20 inches high.
I just can't get the traction, will alway spin out. Run 9-12 tire psi no difference. In the 4500 lbs class front end stays down in 5500 the front might come up alittle. Have all the weight on the back. any ideas to get the power to the ground better? was thinking about putting some older 13.6 -38 45 degrees with about 50% tread left on.

Lengthen the drawbar to lever more weight off the front end. As previously stated. If you are going to make a mistake on tire pressure. Better 2 psi too high instead of 2 psi too low.

Go up to 6000 & 6500.If you don't have enough power to pull second gear pull the heavyest class you can an not run out of power. Saw a stock late A with 16.9/38 beat a stroked G and a stroked M farmall in the 8500lb.5 mph class.

I pull a stock or Division 2 Farmall 400 on all kinds of different tracks with 16.9x34 tires with 5 to 6 psi and I do very well.

I would try a lower pressure so you get the whole bite of the tire.

Well, that sounds like a start. I need to find out the tracks you will be pulling on 2 give you the most accurate info...I'd go with the 13.6x38 tires. I prefer Firestones...use about 13-15 lbs of pressure and see what happens. If you find one side spinning out more than the other, then put 1 psi in that tire. If you pull on a loose track, go with 15, if the track is clay and hard, go with 13. This should help, if it doesn't, I hope someone else knows the answer.

The loose (gravel tracks) I do good on. The hard packed clay tracks, is where i have the trouble. Should some tread be take off the 13.6's?

I pull a JD70 with 14.9 x 38, I've finished near the top and in the middle, been a while since I've been near the bottom, but I've been there too. I've had good luck running between 8-20 psi depending on conditions, and I don't always get it right. A harder tire won't squat so much and will help maintain hitch height, especially on a sled that has a short chain and/or low attach point at the pan. A softer tire might put an extra bar on the ground which would be beneficial when the sled doesn't transfer as much weight to the hitch, such as a long chain or a high attach point on the sled.
