I know John Deere D 's are not the best tractor pull tractors, but I am looking for some info on how to make it a good competitive stock puller at our local fairs.Any ideas on the mods or web sites I can visit to get this info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,Paul.

Always funny to hear the words "stock puller" and "what can I do to increase the HP?" in the same sentance...

Anyway, on the brake thing, how much work would it be to rig up a set of disk brakes off an old 78 Eldorado directly on each axle? The parking brake was a manually engaged mechanism. THis would give you turning brakes.

There is a character who makes a dual exhaust manifold that really wakes up a D. Upping the compression from the 4 to 1 to 8 to one and a gasoline manifold will make certain she doesn't run out of power in st gear. On hard tracks. It's tougher to get a good bite with the low/wide standard chassis tires vs. the tall narrow rowcrop chassis tires.

To up the compression that much, what would you have to do? The dual exhaust is almost on order should you run mufflers or staight pipe ie.double wall pipes? Thanks Paul.

One of the biggest dis-advantages of the JD-D is most do not have individual brakes to help with the steering. They can be a good puller, especially for dead weight pulling. Put some high altitude/compression pistons in it, it has good cubic inches in stock form, if you dare bore it oversize for a little more power. My dad pulls one with high altitude pistons, the only compliant is it doesn't have the individual brakes to help with steering. It pulls best with the front end in the air, not way up but with the front tires bobbing. It is all trial and error, they are fun to pull and are a crowd favorite. Good Luck.
