broken headstuds on c152 motor

the head studs on the water jacket side of the motor are all fused in the block and are all broken so I tried to extract one of them and left harder metal in there than I started with lol so the question I have is there any one that runs 1/2 studs instead of 3/8 or should I just drill and helicoil all the broken ones out, because I tried very skilfully not to end up in the boat I am in right now, any advice or ideas

What I dislike is those little 1/4 inch bolts in the water plates,, there is always one out of the whole bunch that seems to break off. had one that broke 5 of em!! ended up setting it up in the mill and drilled and tapped em back out. Had one time, the head stud snapped,,,, drilled the center of the bolt out,,, still no movement,, took it to a shop that had a small plasma cutter and he was good at running it!! He cut that bolt right out and never touched the threads in the block!! see, on some of em,, the bolts sit in the coolant,, so its thru all the way thru the casting,,, some, have the holes sealed from the casting,,, so might work, or might not,, depending on if its open or closed in the bolt hole.. If when ever possible,, try to set it up in a drill press or mill with a carbide bit and slowly drill em out. The press or mill holds things still and straight so the bit does not wander and eggshape the hole. Maybe even heat up the block with a torch to aide once things are set to remove,, or attempt to remove. Its not fun, but it can be done. take your time. Chad

Is there a automotive machine shop around or a machine shop . Take it someware that has the correct machines to remove them.

A machine shop may have a small EDM machine to burn out the broken studs , they use them to burn out broken taps .

A automotive machine shop can at least machine them out on center and repair or replace the threads , as well as boil the block to give you a nice clean fresh block to work with .

I know it's not a simple answer but with a broken extractor it just got tuff .

That happened to me and everyone said it was hopeless, machine shops included. I broke an extractor off in mine. I used a masonary bit, drilled it right out killed tyhe bit, and I retaped it, put a new stud in and tractor runs fine

Tom you are one lucky guy !!!! The carbide tip on that drill got you threw, usally we don't have that kind of luck .

I always try and drill all the way threw and fill it with a good penatrating oil and let it sit a day or so . I work in a machine shop so this isn't uncommon for us .
