I have the choice between two options. I have a case 400 at 650 cubic inches running 1920 rpms, or a case LA at 840 cubic inches running 1440. Which would be better. I have an opinion, but I want to know some of yours

The most cubic feet of air and lbs of fuel through the engine per minute makes the most HP.

or 5252.... same equation, correct numbers...

If both of these engines are "built" about the same (compression, efficiency, etc), they are comparable. Take the (RPM * Displacement) of both motors -- They're fairly close. It's just a measure of how much air the engine can suck in (which means a relative ratio of the amount of fuel (i.e. BTU's).

RPM"s Are HP but you cant beat torque all HP is is RPM X torque Divided by 5959

well its deep. cubic inches free horsepower . at 5200 rpms the torque and horsepower are equall on dyno anyway so if making 300 lbs of torque at 5200 then power will be 300 horses . thats why diesel engines show more torque than horses .no manufacturer will turn one 5 + grand

...and I thought I was lucky by having a set of matching snap-on sockets..lol..I'd take the 400 because of the gear selection, especially if you are gonna run mostly speed limit...But dont take it from me.. AC (because apparently I'm an idiot)

I would be pulling mostly 5 mph and 8 mph, but some Div. IV natpa also.

It depends on what Div. you are planing on pulling in. Those big cubes, if you have enough air flow, are really good in MPH classes. The faster RPM'S,if it will hold them, are better in an open class.

Always remember---- round cubic inches can only be beat by rectangular dollars!!!!

Casepuller22, Are you buying or considering building, what area or association do you pull in, what division do you intend to run. What gear do you think you can run the 400 tranny in. I'm guessing the mph of the 400 to be in the 15 mph range at stock rpm with stock rubber in 8th,The LA can easily be regeared, I have changed gearing in my DC and it is similar only heavier built. I'm a case man and trying to figure out who you are going to be playing with, what competition you will have. If the 400 is geared to slow sounds like you are playing in div 4-5 if so don't waste your time on either, build a big cube 6 cyl, as that is what you will be up against, There are guys out there that build fast gears for the case transmission. useing the 650 figure you gave for the 4, a same setup in a 6 would be 975. Just more to think about, good luck in whatever you do.

I would choose more cubic inches over RPM. RPM doesn't give you any more horse power. I don't know too much about the two Cases you are talking about, but the 400 is newer so would it have any options that would be in favor over the LA? such as gearing etc..

That is one plus to the 400, it has 8 gears, but it is extemely low geared. The LA would need some gearing changes I think. I think both can pull in 4500 and up as far as wieght is concerned.
