52 JD A Puller

I Have a 1952 JD A that I pull but, it always spins out. It is stock and has the six speed so I have the low first gear and I use it. I pull in the 5500 lb. class. I have 13.6 X 38's on right now and plan to use a 14 inch wide rim. My question is would it be better to run a 15.5 or a 16.9 tire on the 14 inch rim. I have not lugged the tractor down at all. It spins out way to eary and the front end is up about 3 inches. I need more tire on the ground to make the motor work a little. What have you quys done out there. Thanks

I use an 16-9-38 and they work great with about 11 lbs. of air.

If your not lugging it down, your pulling in to low of a gear. You need to pull in the highest gear you can, within the speed limit if you have one. The more ground speed you have, normally the futher you can pull. Finding the right gear for the track takes practice. To low and you power out [spin out]. To high and you'll lug out [motor dies out from lack of power] Sometimes it helps to lower the hitch a little and shift up a gear [faster] to gain ground speed.

I know I am in a low gear but my thinking is that if I shift up to second I won't have enough power when i get to the other end. My club doesn't have a speed limit. Right now I have the hitch set at 19.5 inches from the ground and we are allowed 20. My first gear speed is 1.75 and second is 2.25. It's that 1/2 a mile faster that worries me. I don't want to go too fast and then lug down early. Thanks

we have a 50' A and we run 14.9's on that, it pulls from 6500 to 8000lb. It is completely bone stock. it takes till the 8000lb before the engine even changes sound. I'd say try 14.9's and pull heavier

I don't even know of any "stock" A's here that pull over 6000lbs.
They all start to die in the 5500 lbs class.
And they have a little work done to them.

Check the tire rules where you pull. With the creeper 1st gear, pull in heavier classes-- 6500 and above.

You might be readjusting your draw bar going up to a 16.9X 38. A 14.9 on a 13 inch rim makes for a tall tire. The rear axle being raised off the ground a few inches from tire size to tire size can really affect your chassis and its adjustments to get em to hook up. Never mentioned the hitch specs to know if any gains are to be made there but after a taller tire is put on,,, hitch go up. Maybe a better line of draft in the chassis,,, A late A has alot of torque in that low creeper. Is a 620 that slow?? ChadS

Yeah I may have lower the hitch but it will not be a problem because when I built the draw bar I allowed for movement up and down. Right now I believe my hitch is set at either 19 or 19.5 inches from the ground. We are allowed 20 from the ground. I know that 16.9's are taller than 15.5's. I also believe that 15.5's are the same height as the 13.6 that I am currently using. I could use some hitch height and the 16.9 will change the gear ratio of my first gear and make it a little faster. Don't know if i could run second with a 16.9 because it would be faster to and I wouldn't have enough power on the other end. Some of our tracks are sand, clay, hard clay, and one has some small rocks in it. Would the wider tire help me at all? Thanks

16.9X38 or 34. the taller tire will give you a wider bite and give you more ground speed at the same time by the height difference. It may be a perfect setup for a creeper gear A. When you change your drawbar angles, if you have a drawbar, watch how its flexing under its new settings,,, make sure it strong enough cause it should be pulling down harder on the hitch,,, Which happens to make the front end lift easier, and probably a little higher than the 3 inches your used to seeing,, So if you have weights to put on the nose, Id try it nose heavy a little more than usual, and move the weight back if its too much,, dial it in,,, I had a 43 and a 45 A, the 43 had a 125 kit and the 45 had a 90, both had the fast low gear, 14.9s were too much for em both, 15.5s were the ticket. The creeper gear JD we see pull, they try to run too short of tires, and they got power, but they spin and spin, and burn up the brakes, Not enough ground speed to even think of working the engine at the weight they try to run, and its usually 2000 lbs to light of class. I ran the 45 A in 5500 and the 43 A in 4500, the 45 had more snot, the fast gear and the big tires killed it,,if it had 10 more hp it would have worked out. But woulndt be considered stock in the right crowd to pump em up more. I thought they ran pretty good actually!! I did too much too quick, and ended up selling em. Wish I had the 45 back. Long dash, electric start, just a nice tractor to drive. I once knew whwere they was 2 long dash 45 A's rough but wasnt stuck,,, been thinking of going shoppin. ChadS

Check your rules.. some clubs do not allow anything bigger than a 16.9x34 or 14.9x38 in the lighter classes.

I have 16 9's on my 620. It was a big jump from the 13 6's. I used to spin easy in 2nd and even 3rd gear. Now I have run out of power in second. I pull in7000 and 7500 as 7k is the lightest I can get my tractor. I have seen a A pull with 16 9's and he runs out of power in first gear, But he has the older tranny with a taller gear. With the six speed you should be able to pull the bigger tire. I also know that some people love the 14 9's as well. Its a crap shoot. It sounds like you are getting good traction if you are lifting your wheels up. If your rules alow you may need to weight down the front if you gain more bite. Our rules only allow wheel weights.

personally i would go with the 14.9 -38 firestone f+r they are 3 inches taller than the 13.6 from the ground up i think the 16 would be to big of a jump just my 2 cents

If you are a stock puller an can use (buy the rules) the 16.9-38, then by all means put them on an have fun pulling.
