I was wondering what people have had the best luck with. I have a big cube 1942 JD A, I need to get a gear reduction starter for it. Some people are using one from a bobcat skidsteer and one from a an 8000 series John Deere. I just want to know which one cranks the best.
Thanks

Hey Hot Rod, would you happen to have any photos of the starter bolted to the tractor for sale. And maybe a location and a price?

Yep, well a picture of the tractor anyways, I'd have to take a new picture of the starter itself...photo ads, ad # 209075.

Put it on top--I'm not aware of any decent starter that mounts to the bottom of the case that has a long enough nose to grab the flywheel, let alone that'll have the solenoid in such a location to clear the inside of the case as well.

As far as I know, anyone who is using decent gear reduction or diesel starters are using top-mount bracketery or making their own.

Thanks for the compliment.

I use the ones off the 8.1L JD engines.. it works good.. there are a few different starters.. really just a little different offset.. Not sure which one will work on the A.. but any from the Row Crop 30 series tractors and up will fit.. (Earlier will fit.. but not as good of a starter.) I don't remember what starter we have on the A...

You can go to any good auto parts store and get a gear reduction starter that will work. Just take your old starter and match the gears up. Or call Phill at 765 922 4565 he will have it also.

Mine is over 600 cubes and I use the bobcat starter. Have to open petcocks. Very high compression.

Yes, and it's a "no go". My son has a 552 cube A with 9-1 comp. and his rolls over no problem with petcocks closed. Mine is 10.2-1 comp. The skidsteer starters will bolt right on. I am guessing they will work fine on yours.
