Edpaps idea will give a indication of the coils good or bad, Better yet do as edpap said but get an old known good condenser and go between the hot and ground (+ - -) of the coil and watch the spark jump as the condenser unloads its energy back into the coil. that would duplicate the circuit within the distributor.

you need a good 12 volt battery, spark plug with a wire and some jumper wires. just hook the spark plug to the coil run a ground wire to the plug, hook the pos battery side to the + side of the coil. Then just touch the - post on the coil with a ground wire quickly and you should have spark at the plug. if you want to see what the coil will put out try opening the gap on the plug. the wider the gap the higher the voltage it is puting out.
