C stroup, if your gonna run stock or maybe a 10% over work on your your 88 head or get a 1600-1655 gas head and have it worked over this summer so you can pull that thing now.Thos 99 and Massey 1100 heads are exspensive, if you go that route get a hold of Brian Hitt, I know some other places that have the manifolds and heads to, but he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable and willing to help . Check the rules on the aviation carbs, man they work but some places insist on an agricultural carb, if this is so get a carb off a 6600 John Deere combine(1 7/8") throat, work good in the stock Rpm range. As for motor work the sky(and wallet) is the limit(4.5 inches on the bore is about the limit), keep in mind little to no water left in the block.

If you can find the oliver 99 head or the 1100 massey head it would be better IMO. Some porting would help if you knew where and what to do. Go to big on valve size is you might not help things.

You can check with www.hittmotorsports.com for additional info. He also may have one of the aircraft carbs that would feed it a little better.
You might be able to turn a diesel intake upside down and make an adaptor plate that would feed it better than the stock gas intake.

IIRC, most all 88's that pulled in NATPA rand the 1100 style massey head, same as 99 oliver, again, If I Remember Correctly. You would need the change the water pump slightly.

Im to the point in the build where Im looking at crankshaft options. Is there a drop in crankshaft to replace the non pressurized rod journal, to a pressurized system? What all would have to be done to do this conversion, or should I even worry about it at all? 11 to 1 compression ratio, at the moment a .010 .010 88 crankshaft is what I have. Not going over 2300 rpm.

There may have been a diesel crank that was pressure feed on the rod journals but I can't confirm that.

Your rpm range shouldn't force you to go that route. It's been done many times and 11.1 isn't to much.

Correct me if I am wrong.
From what I hear a 320 heads work great only if you are turning some rpms. From what I heard if you are not running rpms it is not worth it.

Id say a good ported 88 head with larger valves is good for stock stroke, up to 4 inch bore for stock to 20 percent over rpm.

Im working on a 88 engine too!! lots of head porting, bigger valves. We took it out to 4.25 bore, stock stroke, big carb, a better cam. They take JD 3020 sleeves and whiddle em down to fit in the 88 block with just a litle bit of block boring to fit the sleeve, used a 320 head gasket. Not up n running yet, but thats what I did to it. OR, go get you a 3-7/8 bore piston set,, still work on the head, and cam, will be a hard working ol tractor!! Cheap to build too! Just my .05 cents worth

IH 715 combine, C-301 carb, bored out to 1-5/8. New 88 manifold match ported to the head.
