I have a49 Farmall Cub the cylinders are worn from .007 to .010 at the top. The middle and lower are worn within the .025 the book allows for. The pistons are worn quite a bit. Sence the new oversize flat top pistons start at .020 would it be a good or bad idea to use new standard pistons with .020 oversize rings. Thanks for any reply Bob

Bob,

The .0025 wear you have at the bottom is within
limits for std rings, If you fit a set of rings to
the worn part of the cylinder , there is not enough ring gap to absorb the change when the
piston goes to the bottom of the cyl. Things will
come to a screeching halt . Also with a cyl that
is worn .010 , it may or may not bore clean at
.020 as cylinders don't wear concentric.

Bore it , the cast iron pistons are not too
expensive but if you want the aluminium ones for the cub low boy to perk it up a little it's going to hurt .

Thanks for the replys. I would have put the aluminum pistons in but they have a dome and I would need another head or mill mine and I have no idea how much should come out. I am not trying to do a cheap job just didn't want to remove engine at this time. Bob

Thanks George. I was told by CIH the dome pistons would not clear. I will go that route less weight moving around. Bob

Bob, you either need to bore your block .020 and use new .020 pistons & rings or hone your block and roll the dice with new std. rings. I would not mix sizes. If money is not of major consideration, just bore it and it will be good for a good long while. my 2 centavos Mark
