I have rebuilt the engine on my JD2 cyclinder and have a leak out of top corner head stud at high idle. I have had head decked and block decked, new head gasket tried with sealer and without, new head studs and sealed them twice. Frustrated beyone belief...has anyone seen this problem before...

Clean the stud and threaded hole with carb cleaner, so it's oil free, and then seal it with pipe thread seal gunk with teflon. Use the lead washers on the head bolts, and the oil, as suggested, and torque correctly.

Jason, did the head set come with new replacement lead washers??? On my 38 B I wire brushed all the old lead off the studs n used new lead washers as I recall, but thats been a while n Ive slept since lol. Im pretty sure its the head where the lead washers are used instead of the block, maybe both??? I sprayed the head gasket with K & W high temp Kopper Kote but NOT the metal fire rings around the cylinders and used all new lead washers n slowlyyyyy yyyy torqued the head in 5 to 10 pound increments near the end then re torqued after warm ups.

Lead washers????? ????/

John,
There is no lead washers. What does the lead washers do? Washers were not on it when I tore it down and that being the case I didn't know to put them on. I know the engine was tore down before me... After sending my orginal message yesterday, I tore it down again and found high spots on the block where the bolt holes are. I really appreciate your relpy and assistance with this. It has me going crazy. I've invested alot of time and money and am at witts end.

As I recall the lead washers go on the studs so when you torque down the head nuts it lubricates and prevents galling plus seals so coolant cant leak past the studs and into the valve cover area. Dont quote me on that however..... but Im almost positive they are needed and used when you mount the head.

Two things before you say a few choice word. Have you ever used carbon less impression paper to solve head gasket problems. We have a 37 B and it has studs not bolts. Also what did you use for torque values and how did you lubricate the nuts? Do you have a 0 to 1 inch mike. Also did you have the bolt (studs) holes in the block magnafluxed? J.

No I've never used carbonless impression paper. I went 95-100 lbs and did it in 5 steps. Did not use anything to lubricate the nuts. Yes I have a 0 to 1 inch mic. I had the block boiled out, magnifluxed, new piston sleeves and the block was decked. It has 9 studs. I sealed studs when I put them in the block with NAPA aviation form a gasket sealant. I have an old chiltons manual in the JD section for the cylinder head I didn't see anything pretaining to lead washers. Although I just looked at an unstyled A and it had lead washers between the nut and head.
thank you

I don't think I have any paper left. Send me a U. S. mail address and I can hook you up with someone that does. Torque values are normally for lubricated fastners. You also need to clean the threads on the studs and the nuts before putting everything together. Ask the shop if they maggned the stud holes. I have seen then crack and they will not show up untill there is stress on the fastners.
