I have a 1949 Oliver 88 that I am currently trying to restore. I have taken several parts off of it. It's now down to the engine still on the frame. I need help on what to do next. Should I pull the engine and start on that first? I plan on having it sandblasted, but I would like to know how I could remove most of the rust myself on littler parts such as the seat.

Unless you just want to have the frame and engine bead blasted you might try soaking it all in oven cleaner really good then using a high pressure washer. If you have never tried this you would be amazed at how much it will take off. Also if you can find a place that sells commercial strength degreasers they will work good too. Some will strip paint even and most now are citrus based which makes it alot nicer to work with.

I have an 88 also that I will be doing a restoration to probably this coming winter. Let us know how it goes!

For cleaning small parts, a bead blast cabinet is really nice. Sometimes, a machine shop can do the job, or, if you have a large enough compressor, you can rent one. New bead blast cabinets are $300-$3500 depending on size. They utilize fiberglas beads for a cleaning medium. Good luck and all the best..... ...Greg
