How do you check JD A RPM?

I just bought a 1945 JD A. Hand start with wico X mag. It sounds like it is not running fast enough. There is not a great difference form idle to wide open. My '52 A that I used to own sounded like it turned a much higher RPM than this one does. How do I check it? Do I need to buy a tool? And what is the wide open RPM suppose to be?

Thanks for all and any help.

The hand-held tachs work nice if you have access to one. We used to use the little AC Delco tachs at our dealership back when they cost $15 each. A vibration tach will probably also work and they are cheap - still only around $5. We used them mostly on chain-saws and lawn-mowers, but as I recall, they also worked okay on the two-cylinder farm tractors. If you get stuck, I don't live too far from you - I'm in Worcester, Otsego County, NY. I could lend you what you need.

I have one of those old Sears Engine analyzers with built in tachometer. It can be set for four cylinder operation and works great on a John Deere.

Measure in the center of crankshaft with a hand held mechanical tachometer. Electronic ones will have reflective tape to put on crank or flywheel.

An RPM hand held meter. Set speed at 1080 RPM at no load and 975 under load. Ron Mn.
