I am trying to clean out the built up oil and dirt that is inside the air filter on the Allis Chalmers WD I am working on. The filter hasn't been used in years, and the space where the air comes down from the air intake on top to the oil bath is partly plugged with dryed dirt and oil. I have got a long screwdriver down in there and got most of it out, probably OK, but would like to get it clean, does anyone know of a good way to get this stuff out? The space is only about 1/4" wide and it is difficult to even see in there, never mind work and tell if it is really clean. Spray on engine cleaner? Gas?

i use drain cleaner and lots of it in a 5 gallon bucket of water and use the strongest dish soap you can find, let is soak 2 or 3 days and remove and wash with water and may need a little more soaking to finish the job.don't use gas it can cause you to be sent to the burn unit, take your shop,or life, and anything else that will burn, Vingar will kill drain cleaner so keep a bottle around, that stuff won't burn the house down and it smells better,

Thanks, that's about what I figured would work best. Will get to it this weekend.

I'd drop in in a pan of gas, I'd say kero but shoot gas is cheaper and will also do the trick.

Indeed, gas is less expensive, but gasoline will evaporate too quickly. I would use diesel fuel, just set the air cleaner assemblt down into a 5 gallon bucket, fill the bucket with diesel fuel, and let it soak for awhile, maybe a few days. Slosh it up and down in the fuel from time to time, and then pull it out, set it somewhere and let it drip till it's dry.
