Engine Problem

I have a 1944 Model N Fordson tractor and can't get it to run right. This one is a real challenge! I can get it started but it will only run with the choke half closed and it uses so much gas the carburator has a problem getting enough gas from the tank. The compression is about 70 psi. It seems low but not sure. I can't find any specs. on compression. I did a valve job and did a quick check on timing. I can change the timing some with the magneto but it doesn't make any difference. I have checked for air leaks in the manifold but didn't find any. I also pulled two of the pistons and the rings look good or at least they have good tention. Any suggestions. I can't figure out what the problem is.

Thanks, Phil

If none of my suggestions work go the N (Ford) discussion board. There are some good sources for Ford N'S on that board.

A few things to check: Check your air cleaner to see if it is dirty or plugged with something. Check the screen in your sediment bowl to see if its clean and allowing enough gas to run into the carb. Maybe build up in side of gas tank around the bottom oulet thus not letting enough gas to flow out. These are quick checks and if all looks good, then a carb rebuild is probaly next. Good luck.
