I was wondering if anyone could help me with getting a rear light of a 435 to work. I have check the wiring from the switch with a tester and it works fine. When I hook up the wires, the lights (normal and the light with red ) don't work. If I touch the light housing or bolt of the light where it hooks up to the bracket it shows to be hot or the tester lights up indicating it is hot. My question are: is my light no good (used to work perfect) or is this normal and the light itself becomes grounded when hooked up or could it be that the insulating of the connections is bad? Need help understanding what to do!

Thanks

Dan

Your mounting bolt area, or the parts of the la,p riveted to the mounting base are either rusty, or there's paint preventing the lamp housing from being grounded.

Connect one end of a jumper wire to a good, clean chassis graound, and touch the other end to the lamp's metal housing, which will now be grounded, and the lamp will light. Having verified this, clean things up so the housing is properly grounded.

working with truck wireing as a mechanic, I've always found that if your ground is showing up as "hot", your ground is not good enough. also are you hooked up to your battery right? jd 435 is pos ground

Dan, Sounds like you don"t have a ground. The light housing should ground itself where it clamps onto the mounting bracket. It"s pretty common for the ground to be lost due to paint or corrosion. I always have to scrape some of the paint off under the clamp. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Would the light housing show to be hot? When I grounded the tester and touched the housing the tester lit up indicating it was hot. If I remember I grounded the light by touching the ground on the battery and it sparked pretty good.

I thought too it wasn't grounded because of the new paint and will try to scrape off some to get a good ground, but is it normal then the light housing and bolt would be hot? I appologize for not being up on the electrical aspect of this situation, but figured I would ask for help rather first rather than spend money buying a new light when the present light might be good

Thanks for your response and help.

Dan

I don"t know if it is hot or not. It"s been awhile since I worked on one of these but I"ll check mine tonight and report back.

I checked mine this evening and the housing is not hot. Sounds like you have a short somewhere inside the can.

I sanded a couple of places to create a good ground and low and behold it works! Thanks to everyone for their help! Really is appreciated!
