Greetings from Texas...
I honed out the lift cylinder on my early Ferguson TO35, and put in a new piston and rings. I got rid of 90% of the scoring, but I can get a .006" feeler guage between the piston and cylinder wall. I know there has to be some clearance, and this is probably over spec, but how much is too much? Am I gonna be horribly disappointed if I leave it as is? The only alternative I see is modifying a 3" unit to fit the tractor, which I hear is a booger. (Also not cheap). Any thoughts?

what izz the bore of the one ya got. the N izz 2 1/2". my parts book shows the 3" serial # 265*** and up 3" $65.00, sure don't sound rite. I have found the rings werk better on a worn cylinder over the o-ring type. Now to play a little you could have new ring groves cut and even have a grove cut for a o-ring and back up washer, you sure need a machine shop buddy rite now. I see no reason you could not run 6 rings. Me I would git a new lift cylinder and never look back.

Mines an early one, 2 1/2". I've heard you can fit a 3" in, but things have to be "adjusted" a bit, and the fact that tha draft control mechanism bolts directly to the cylinder makes me nervous. Hey, I thought of that; putting on extra rings and an O-ring, just for giggles. There are machine shops in the area, maybe I should make a few calls.
I kinda thought the O-ring by itself might not be good on a worn bore, since there's only one ring.

On the 9n/2n/8n and probably the to-20 you can get a new piston that uses an oring and leather washer.. it's quite tolerant of larger than spec bores.

I say 'probably' ont he 20 as it is the same ferguson system pump as on the 9n/2n . lift cover and all.

Many parts are common twixt the ford and fergies. I've even seen an 8n with it's tranny, that was bolted up to a fergy diffy. Owner didn't realize the difference till he went to replace the pto shaft and the 8n shaft he bought wouldn't fit!!

Check to see if the pistons for the N and fergy are same size.. if so investigate a new piston and oring and washer.. should be a 20 deal.. otherwise you can get a new cyl.. not sure of fergy prices.. but a new cyl for a ford N is about 90$.. ( I don't think the fergy and N cyls are compatible due to some casting difference.. however bore may be similar????

Thanks, soundguy, I'll look into that. I can actually get the right cylinder for this thing, re-sleeved, but they go for $310, which is a bit of a rip. The 3" unit, complete, would be about $130 with shipping, and then I'd have to "mess" with it, to make it fit.

man that sleaving price is awfully high.. does your local machinist have 6 kids in college?

Seems like you could overbore to smooth and then turn a custom piston out of aluminum.. etc.. and come out cheaper.. etc...

That's the Ebay price. I would have thought there'd be a repair piston, say .010" oversize, for just this purpose, but I guess not.
