Lack of knowledge forced me to weld my exhaust manifold while on the Detroit 3-53 engine. I didn't know how to remove the governor/rack/pump set up. The manifold is like a funnel and slag must have fell through an open valve. I unknowingly cranked it over only for about 3/4 a stroke and it stopped dead. Must be on top of a piston or stuck a valve open? So I'm just feeling that the heads gotta come off? There's no ignition, smog pumps or anything much on the outside besides the w-pump and gov setup and a large housing behind the head? Does this drive the blower? I will get help reassembling but contrary to my situation I am mechanically inclined. I'm trying to get a manual I just want to know, should I be aware of anything during teardown? Appreciate any help. Thank you.

Meathead you should prob not turn it over back and forth b/c the detroit 2 strokes have slots in the sleeves for the air to enter from the air box. If the slag falls in there as soon as the engine starts it will be right back in and cause you alot of problems. You should pull the head off and really see what is down in there. My advice if you have never worked on a detroit take it to someone who has. If you do not set your fuel racks right when you reassemble the head and injectors as soon as you start it you will send the engine to distruction. I have worked on detroits for awhile take my advice and get someone who can help you.

Thanks guys, yep there aren't any plugs, I know this of course. I got a 3-53 book and the head looks like a piece of cake to remove, just like the welding aaye! Kidding, doesn't look too bad though. Travis, I do not plan on putting it back together by myself but rather with an experienced mechanic I know who is 100$ hr. I agree heads gotta come off just to be safe. Is there any caution arear I should be awarew of during the disassembley? What about the governor setup, the book is sorta vague on that. Thank you all.

Meathead Hahaha, aren't we all? Yes remove the head and don't turn the motor. Start by looking good and hard at that book, if its a DD book, so you know what you have. You will need a special tool or two that shouldn't cost much. It all has to be adjusted correctly when you put the head back on.
Call me a liar if you like, but I think you can disconnect the gov link that comes through the head and not worry about the rest. Try to drain the water form engine before loosening any head bolts. Check the valves on the hole that passed the crud for straightness. they bend pretty easy when force meets immovable object. Make absolutely certain that the rack is free when back on the engine ready to hook up linkage. And make shure the air shutter on intake is functioning well. If ya don't have the time to do all that and pay attention to details take it and pay the other guy to.

If you pull the head, clamp all the liners down before you turn the crank. If memory serves correctly the timing case is separate from the head, shouldn't interfere unless someone used too long of bolt some where in cover.

meathead, check with your local rental companys and see if you can rent a bore video camera and pull each spark plug and use the camera to check the inside of the cylinders , you may then be able to turn the crank back and like john said use a magnet to remove the object through the spark-plug hole, good luck, also let us know what you do so we will know if it works, could happen to me , thanks charles

You may be able to take out an injector and get it, I'm not real familiar with Detroits and less with injectors so I'm not sure how much of a pain that is. Should give you a sizable hole to get a tool in tho'.

Try pulling the exhaust manifold off and the valve cover. Maybe you can see which cyl. it's in and use a magnet or shop vac to get it out. You may have to turn the crank back and forth a little to get the slag loose if it's caught in a valve.
