Farmall H Battery Electrical Info

My question is in regard to a 1951 Farmall H Battery. I can recall my father using both 6V and 12V batteries in this tractor. The 12V started the tractor well, but didn't stay charged. The tractor has now sat for a good number of years. I popped the 6V battery from our Farmall C into the H, but it just barely turned over, and I could barely even feel a jolt on the metal end of the spark plug wire. With a 12 volt battery in it, it turned over very well, and started both off the hand crank and the starter.

Do I fit the proper 12V battery to it? Or, if I go out and buy the 6V battery for in it, am I going to be wasting my money? Also, how do I tell which of the various components are stock 6V components, and which might have been replaced with 12V components? The generator looks to be the original, not oversized, and the hood is not cut. What else can the uneducated like myself look for on this tractor to figure out 6 or 12?

Thanks,
-Doug

If you want to see if your 6v genny/regulator/cutout is working, then take your 6v battery and set it ont he ground next to the machine. Take the line coming from the regulator or cutout, that would normally be the charge line back to the battery / solenoid, and hook it to the correct battery post on the 6v battery. Hook the other battery post to the tractor ground. Take the coil wire off the ignition switch and be ready to hook it to that 'hot' terminal onthe 6v battery. Place your 12v battery in the tractor, and hook up so you can use it to start the tractor.. now hookup that coil wire and then start the tractor 9 starts on 12v.. runs on 6v ).. take your meter and see if the battery is now charging at above 6v. perhaps at 7.x or 8v.. etc. If so.. your charging system is good... just need to get the starter / cables checked .. etc.. A weak 6v battery.. or a dragging/worn starter or small / coroded cables makes a 6v hard to start..

It is likely 6 volt -- you need large cables and clean connections. I would suggest replacing all of them, with no smaller than # 2, larger if you can find them. If you go to 12 volt you either need an alternator or have the generator changed to 12 volt, you also need a ballast resistor between the alternator and the 6 volt coil. The link is courtesy of Bob M, who posts on the Farmall board, where this topic has been discussed many times. There are several options depending on how your tractor is set up, pick the correct one. But, any 6 volt tractor battery that fits will work, I think My C and Super H use the same battery. There are differences in cranking amps, etc. The cheap 6 volts I buy don't last very long, probably because of lack of use, next one I buy is going to be a good one.
