Hello. Does anyone know if brake fluid affects jb weld? I have aluminum calipers that are corroded where the o-ring fits, and wanted to know if I used jb weld in the groove (after thorough cleaning), fitted the proper o-ring in it (with a release agent) and let it cure, would I have any problems with it. Nobody sells these calipers-I've tried.

The problem with the brake fluid isn't after the JB weld is applied, it's the before part. the brake fluid in the aluminum won't allow the JB weld to adhere properly thus creating a big gummy mess in the caliper, even with new dot 5 fluid. also JB weld is only good for about 300-400 degrees which is easily obtanable in a brake calliper....I would seek someone who specializes in re-furbing brake components...If that groove is in the caliper now...It should be easy to put one in a sleeve that will be pressed in,or shink fit in. Likely the shop owners didn't want to do the job, not that it couldn't be done. Check some of the auto restorer sites you should be able to find something there ....Shawn

JB weld will not stand up to standard brake fluid. Is the O ring on the piston, or on one of the fluid inlets into the caliper? If it is in the piston, have a new one made, if it is the bore, have it sleeved, if it is an inlet, I would bore the surface that was corroded out, and make an adapter that has fresh sealing surface, new I.D. threads, and treaded on the outside to fit your bored out hole size. Also I would advise against trying to weld and re-machine the surface, because brake fluid is very good at soaking in to aluminum and contaminating the weld, even ehen you think you baked it out. this will result in a very porous surface that will be hard to clean up....Shawn

Hello Shawnspeed. The o-ring fits in the bore (piston is smooth). Thanks for the information-I tried to find someone that can sleeve it, but with that groove, the local shops tell me it's a no go. What do you think about this new brake fluid (silicone)?

What does the caliper go on...maybe someone can help you find a good one..... Brakes are the most important part on any equipment.....brakes failing at the wrong time can mean disaster..... .what ever you do, this is one of those things that can sure make you wish you would have done something else....
