I am restoring the horns that will ride under the hood of our 49 Ford 1/2 ton, after sanding down and prepping the covers that protect the electronics I sprayed grey primer only to find a spot about the size of a silver dollar cracking and edging up.What could have caused that? Dan in AB

If you want things to last, step up to a high quality product like PPG DPLF Epoxy sealer primer. A high quality foundation is essential for longevity and durability. You can put cheaper paints over it. The cheap paint may fade, but the substrate will last. Or you can step up to a paint like PPG DCC (acrylic urethane) mixed in the color you need and it will last and last.

I am asuming you didn't strip them to metal. If you did disreguard this answer. The primer you used was probably acrylic laquer and there was no doubt some low grade enamel sprayed on the horns sometime in their life to freshen them up. Laquer thinner in the primer is a harsh solvent and will "eat" uncured enamel or unbaked enamel. If yuo don't think this is the problem,I will need more specifics from start to finish. Assuming this is the problem, strip them to metal and start over. You can put enamel over laquer primer, just not the other way around. Good luck!
