I just bought a 1968 backhoe with a gas motor (as is), when I bought it, I knew it wouldn't start. I figured maybe a bad starter. We put a new starter on --NO LUCK. The battery is good & we have tried jump starting (Good jumpers hooked directly to the starter)
The symptoms are:
When watching the fan & you hit start the fan rotates about a half inch, each time you apply a start it just barely moves the motor. This is with the spark plugs in or out. This tractor has a sprocket, driving a chain on the front of the engine & I can only imagine this is trying to run a hydraulic pump, I bought a service manual & a parts manual from "Yesterdays Tractor" but these manuals don't even mention the backhoe nor anything about the hydraulics.I have to say I have worked on lots of cars & trucks. But I have ZERO experience with tractors
By the way this tractor looks VERY good. It has a fairly new paint job.The bucket(about a 1/2-3/4 yard) has some paint worn off near the bottom as if it has been operated some but who knows how much. My thought is maybe; an old fellow owned it & he passed away & the younger folks got hold of it & messed it up somehow. & so they decided to just get rid of it.I bought it sight unseen when my son saw it next to a road, here in central oregon. I was living in the Seattle area at the time. Anyway one clue MAYBE????? all the hydraulic pistons on the hoe & bucket move easily ..Except the left outrigger, which is stuck in the down position. We tried raising it with a bobcat front end loader & could just budge the outrigger lifting it about2", it is stuck almost full down.. Anybody think maybe the Hydraulics driving this piston is the problem? The tractor tows easily in neutral. When in any gear the wheels lock up when towed
Any feedback would be MOST appreciated
Thanks Ron

Sounds like your engine is seized. The I60 is the 1965 D-15 industrial, renamed the I600 during 1966. Regarding that stuck outrigger, I wouldn't try moving it unless someone was operating the control lever- that might let the oil on the back side go back into the system. Or disconnect the hose and catch the oil as you raise the outrigger. Thyen tie it up so you can move the unit easily.

Thanks for the info.
We tried operating the hydro controls while lifting the stuck outrigger with no luck. I was told that the sprocket on the front of the motor is driving a hydraulic pump & maybe that pump is jambed, does that make sense at all?
I am living about 50 miles from my sons' house & thats where the tractor is at ( so I am not able to tear into the problem now), I am in the process of having a new house built & so I will have the tractor hauled to my new place in a few weeks. But in the meantime I am gathering info.
Normally I would have had this thing fixed long before now. Either by pulling the motor or whatever.
Anyway thanks for the help!!

Hopefully the pump is the problem- I thought of that when you said the fan blade moves a bit- that was curious, since normally a stuck engine doesn't move at all. Should be a connector link on that double chain coupler on the pump. Would be the first place to start. It's summer now, so can't be frozen gearboxes.

Many thanks for the tip on the chain link. That will be my first step in the troubleshooting process. Do you happen to know if the hydraulic pump that chain is driving is the main pump for all the hydraulics? The frame of the tractor seems to be the oil reservoir. Also does this tractor take motor oil for the hydraulics? My manual has Zero info on the hydraulics system. Do you happen to know what publication would show the hydraulics system/ backhoe & bucket & where I could find such a pub? I have never worked on a backhoe at all & really have no clue at all. My dad owned a Caterpillar 30. Which if you aren't familiar was an old gas 30hp bulldozer(about a 6-8 ton tractor)we once rebuilt that back in the 1950s. That is about my only experience with tractors, so any info on this
I-60 is very much appreciated!!
Again many thanks for your help!!
