Charlynn Hydraulic Valve

An older tractor I am restoring, has a Charlynn hydraulic valve. The valve has two working ports, but only seems to operate one way (the tractor has live hydraulics). Is there a way to tell if this valve is a one-way valve, or if the valve is simply worn out? Thanks for your help.

I also have a tractor with a charlyne lifter/loader. I was blown away to walk into a local part store and find the exact same valve on the shelf. The valve was made by a company called Gresen. If you go to WWW.princessauto.com, click on "download catalogue" and then chose hydraulics you will find a selection of these gresen valves.

To answer your question. If the valve has 3 ports they will be inlet, port A, and exhaust or outlet. These are "3 way" valves used on single acting cylinders. If the valve has 4 ports, inlet, port A, Port B and outlet, it is a "4 way" valve and can be used to control double acting cylinders.

Hope that helps.

Oh btw... the gresen valve in Canadian dollars is 150.00 which is about 100 us. Good deal for you.

As recently as 10 years ago, I bought a new part from these guys who had a distributor place in town. Maybe you could find a part number and a way to contact them to see just what they can tell you.

You didn't say what the valve is being used for. If it's for a loader with single action pressure would lift the loader and when lowering the arms fluid would flow back in the same hose. a single acting valve should have one working port and the double acting would have 2 [these are in line with the control spool]
