I have a 1979 John Deere 300 with a Kohler K341 16HP engine and it decide to die today. I was driving along and the unit sputter and stopped. My first thought it was out gas but when I check it was more that half full. I tried to start it again but no luck. The engine will crank but not fire now. I checked the fuel supply and it goes through the fuel pump and into the Carb the carb's bowl is also full of fuel. The spark plug also appears to have good spark. I tried pulling a little fuel into the carb and the spark plug but the engine still would not fire. I out of ideas can anyone help me. Thanks.

First, do as Bill suggested and change the plug. That might be the problem.

Did it seem to change tone, lose a little power, and then die? If so, there is a decent chance the exhaust valve is stuck open, and that's not uncommon with the old Kohler cast iron engines.

Move the sparkplug out of the way and run a compression test. If you don't have a tester, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and hit the starter to see if it's building up compression.

If you have no compression, pull the head off of it and check those valves.
