I am trying to put on the front cover and have ruined two gaskets trying. The first was a black/red rubbery gasket and the second was a thick beige papery gasket. In both cases, I spread a thin layer of Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker on both sides. When I began tightening the bolts (in a back and forth pattern and to only one-third of the recommended torque), the gaskets stretched, tore, and slipped out the edges. Is it the gasket maker causing this? Ought I to use any type of gasket sealant or only the gasket? Thank you for any advice.

Try using Indian Head Gasket Shellac available at most auto parts stores. That's the best stuff for a paper gasket. Only apply to one side because it can be really hard to get apart again if you have to. If using the rubber gasket I would use use just the gasket and no sealer. The rubber gasket should be thick enough to seal on it's own.

I'm not a Ford person, but for that type of thing, I just use copper coat. I don't believe I've ever torn a gasket, no matter what I used. Once you have the bolts through them, they should stay there. You said thin coat, but it sounds like it is too thick. Other than you need to get the factory gaskets, if you can find them, I have no other ideas.
