just tuned up, ran hard for a few hours... Now, I start it, it starts easy, purrs like a kitten for about 2 minutes, and then just shuts off. Then it won't start for a while. I come out an hour or so later, it does it all over again. I cleaned the air filter, thinking it's got fuel (I checked flow to carb and it looks good) and spark (since it does run) so it must be O2 deprived. Didn't work. I'm lost. Any ideas.

Oh, and I bought a new manifold too. The old one was brittle and baked out. It was cracking in several places, and one previous repair was recracking. I bought a us made reproduction.

Yesterday I opened the valve at the bottom of the carb and there did seem to be a flow problem. I was thinking "is it a flow problem or is the bowl simply not full enough yet for the flow to start" since I always cut off the gas when I leave it to sit. At the same time, I tapped on the side with a screwdriver handle and the flow started. I cranked it up and let it run for a few minutes and took a spin around the yard. I think the float valve was stuck. I'm hoping I'm fixed up now. Thanks for everyone's help. My wife has me on a "no more money on the tractor" budget, so I was hoping not to have to call on a mechanic.

I"ve had the same problem in the past on my 960. My problem was caused by a vacuum leak at the intake manifold gasket. Somehow, the intake wasn"t torqued tight and was quite loose and air was getting past the gasket. I also had a crack in the manifold. When the engine heated up, things would expand and the air leak would increase and it would die. I would let it set and cool awhile and it would then start fine, then as soon as it got warm, it would die again and not want to restart. One clue should have been that I had to use a lot of choke and keep part of the choke on for awhile before the problem got that bad. At first I thought it wa s carb problem and went through rebuilding it and setting the float. Then taking it apart and resetting the float, when the whole time that wasn"t the problem. Once I had thought about it long enough and figured out that my air fuel ratio was the problem, it occured to me that it might be a vacuum leak. I got the intake sealed, I never had that problem again.

If it was a condensor.. I'd expect it to eventually burn the points after a few starting attempts, and then there would be no start.

I know you said you checked the fuel flow -TO- the carb.. but that is only half tha game. You need to check the flow thru the carb.. I.e. at the bowl drain.

Sounds like your float is stuck 'up', or the needle is plugged only letting gas drip into the fuel bowl.. .. you sart it up, and it runs all the gas out of the carb then dies... then it takes time to dribble some gas back in the carb to start again.

i've seen this MANY times before.. and not just on tractors... many time son lawn equipment.. especially 'brigs'..
