I have a 1968 JD 400 with the tsx905sl carb in it is a solenoid (ar67706) which does'nt last long. Any know replacement without buying another from a deere dealer- at 200$ plus. Would like to know a way of bypassing the solenoid so it will run without it. Can't follow the manual because the replacement is not made to be opened up to reverse the spring.

They shouldn't be going bad that fast - I suspect there's a problem eslewhere. They often short out at the connector-harness that bolts to the carburetor. But, changing it over to a manual adjustable main-jet system is easy as long as you can still get the parts. We changed over many years ago and usually bought the parts from a carburetor shop. The same parts, however, were available over the counter from Deere for a different application - but I don't remember what. Seems the 420 - 440 gas has a similar adjustable main jet - but probably smaller. Main thing is once you put a conventional main jet assembly in, you just have to keep the engine idle adjusted low - otherwise it won't shut off properly.
