I have a Ford 901 Rotary Cutter that is in good condition, except for the input shaft. You see, the previous owner managed to twist it in two pieces, just forward of the gearbox. I've disassembled the GB, and plan to clean-up the twisted/mangled areas on the halved input shaft, and splice-in a piece of 1" diameter round bar to get the original length, weld the shaft sections together and see if it works.

A replacement shaft is over $300, and the mower is in good enough condition to probably warrant it, but I don't think I have much to lose by trying to fix it.

By the way, the PTO shaft and slip clutch is all there, and in good shape. Any ideas on HOW this could have happened to begin with?

Any thoughts?

Perhaps a flay in the shaft?

As long as yo have it disassembled, you don't have much to loose. i fthe weld breaks.. it will do so a tthe reapir most likely.

Just keep the bearing and seal surfaces covered to prevent weld spatter to get on it.. square the pieces off, deeply v-groove and go for max 100% penetration,

True it all up and check with a straight edge and go.

I think it will work. The bearings are still on the input shaft, and I really didn't want to pull them. Do you think I should remove them to keep the heat from distorting them?

It's deffinately a good idea to remove any seals or bearings from the shaft.
