Hey I have a PTO question for the JD experts out there. I have a '68 JD 4020 Diesel w/synchro trans. When I put a load on the PTO, such as running a haybine or baler, in the cab I can hear a sound like "whoop..... whoop". I cannot hear the noise outside of the cab. This only happens when there is a load on the PTO. It does not do this without a load and the PTO engaged. The trans works great. I know there is a PTO bearing at the end of the PTO shaft that is easily changed since there is a bolt on end cover. Is there possibly another issue internally? or is this typical with the age of the tractor, they like to bark like that. Please dont say I have to split the tractor?

Been working on 4020s since they came out new.Never heard a PTO go whoop whoop.lol.Have you grease the PTO engaging bearing lately? That clutch bearing runs on the clutch fingers when the lever is engaged unlike most other clutches where the throw out bearing only runs on the pressure plate fingers when the clutch is disengaged.
You can remove the inspection plate under the clutch housing and take a look to see if the bearing engages all 3 fingers at the same time. One or two of the fingers could be out of adjustment.
