I have a Ferguston TO-35 with a Standard 23C diesel. It has been coverted to 12 volts. The original wiring is still in place so current is going through the original resistor to the glow plugs. The glow plugs are not heating corretly (they are new). Can I run 12 volts directly to the plugs without burning them out or do I need to use a differt type resistor than the one that came with the tractor for 6 volt use?

What glow-plugs did you get new? And, if OEM, where did you get them? What is the voltage-rating stamped on them? I tried getting new plugs back in the 70s for my Allis Chalmers ED-40 (has the same 23C engine) and couldn't find any. In fact, at the time, I couldn't hardly find any parts. Now, with the Internet, I've found several places overseas selling most engine parts. I made threaded adapters and put in newer and more common glow-plugs along with a controller. My ED-40 has always been 12 volt. It came new from the dealer (around 1960) with four glow-plugs and also an intake-manifold heater for cold starting. The glow-plugs would take 30-40 seconds to heat. I made adapters and installed fast-heat plugs as used in GM diesel pick-up trucks. There are several tractors that use that engine and also a few cars (mostly British taxi-cabs). Many have 12 volt systems including my Allis Chalmers ED-40. One place, of many, that has engine parts is:

You can get these heater plugs from Sparex as part # S61336. If you don't know your local Sparex dealer, email :- sparex@sparex.com, tell them your location and the will let you know. They also sell lots of parts for this 23c engine as well as the rest of the tractor.
