Engine will not shut off

I recently cleaned up and repainted a McCormick W6 which has been converted to 12 volt with an alternator. The tractor will start fine but now I can't shut it off with the switch. I have to pull the coil wire from the distributor. When I took the parts foo I tried to keep all the wires connected so I would not have a problem. Obviously, that did not work.

It shut off before I started work on it, so I don't think the problem is with the switch. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mike

Mike, it sounds to me like when it was converted to an alternator they may have used like a GM 10 SI 3 wire alternator n configured it to work like a One Wire and used the ignition switch to coil feed circuit to excite the alternators lil No 1 side input terminal AND DIDNT USE A RESISTOR OR DIODE IN THAT CIRCUIT. What happens is the alternator backfeeds the ignition coil so she still runs even with the switch off.

See if there isnt a wire leading to a lil side No 1 terminal on the alternator???? And if so if its not fed off the coils high input terminal or the ignition switches IGN output terminal (same point electrically) ???

If so, place a 10 ohm 5 watt resistor in series in that circuit n I bet she will stop then with the ignition turned off?? If NOT, then get a 5 amp 50 PIV diode and place it in that same series circuit (from either coils input or ignition switches IGN output to the alternatotrs lil No 1 side terminal) and Im sure the problem will stop then. NOTE if you use a diode its - cathode terminal wires to the alternator and its + anode is what gets voltage from the coils input or switches IGN output terminal.

Post back any questions and agian this is so ifffff they used a GM 10 SI or similar 3 wire alternator wired to work as a one wire alternator and fed the excitation curcuit from the ignition circuit to teh coil. If you have a different set up let me know what it is and I will re diagnoise the problem.

Thanks for the reply, John. It looks like there is some sort of resistor in the wiring. I"ll check it and get back with you. Now, if I hooked up the wires to that resistor in circuit backwards from what it originally was could that have the same effect as not havin a resistor? Those are the only wires I took loose when I removed the clutch cover off the tractor.

The resistor has to be in series AFTER the coil or ignition switches voltage feed (when IGN is On) and BEFORE the alternators No 1 side terminal to work. Sure its 10 ohms?? If so and its in series it should prevent run on UNLESS its miswired as you mentioned??? If not a diode sure would buttttt tt a 10 ohm resistor ought to do the trick plus it provides some degree of protection (current limiting) for the alternator.
