Hi all. I just bought a JD 112 to make into my first restoration project. I thought I'd start simple and then work my way into larger diesel tractors.

Can anyone tell me what the best place to start is? Should I plan on sandblasting every piece on the thing? Thanks for everyone's help.

Well, there are the mechanicals and the cosmetics to lean about. Mechanicals are much more straight forward -manuals, experience, other people for resources. Cosmetics require more knowledge and practice. Are you the kind of person who is detail oriented? Do you demand quality and doing things the right way? Do you believe in spending a little extra money on products to make your work last? If so, welcome to the club. I"d then advise you to hang around the paint and body discussion board of www.chevytalk.com There you can pick up tips and procedures for stripping, welding, metal prep, metal sealing, bodywork and painting, and the proper materials. To do things right, you should also be preparing all the hardware to send out for plating. Your hardware was originally silver cad plated, but that is difficult to find anyone doing that anymore. Therefore I replate in silver zinc at www.detailplating.com It"s a little more corrosion protection and it"s a little brighter finish. Be organized, take lots of digital pics for reference, and be a forensic detective.

Thanks for all of the good advice. I checked out your site....looks pretty cool and I'll definately check out the silver zinc plating. Do you think it's worth it for something like a JD 112?

The best place to start is by reading all the books about the machine you can get hold of. Then start gathering information about it. This will familiarize you with it and help you visualize what you will end up with. Then talk to someone who has done it if possible and get their advice on it so you can avoid any pitfalls they may have found. Do not sand blast anything you don"t intend to disassemble completely and clean at least 25 times to get al the sand out of it!!

Thanks, Gene. I really appreciate the feedback. I've found that there is no shortage of info on the JD tractors. Brian.
