Hello. My name is Chris and I live in Manitoba, Canada. I have a mid 50's ford 9n and the 3-point hitch isn't lifting. A bit of history on it first. I bought the tractor from a local farmer who owned it for 20 years. It sat unused for almost 3 years. It also came with a rear blade. When I first put the blade on, it raised and loweredpretty good, except when it reached the top. When it was in the raised position, it would pulse up and down about an inch. After I lowered the blade , it wouldn't work at all.I checked the rearend fluid and noticed it was low. After I topped the fluid up, it still wouldn't work. I called the farmer who I bought the tractor from to see if he ever encountered this problem befrore, and he had not. I don't have any reason to doubt him, as he is a friend of the family. If you have any ideas about how to check this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Thankyou for taking the time . Chris.

Thanks for the info gang!I"ll try your advise on the weekend, hopefully I can find the problem. One thing I forgot to mention was, you could easily lift the arms up and down with no trouble at all by hand when it"s running. One other thing...does the pump need to be primed if the rearend was low on fluid or is it self priming? Thanks again!! Chris

It's normal top be able to lif the 3pt arms by hand.. they are not solidly coupled to the lift piston.

The belly pump on a 9n / 2n / 8n is oil imersed.. it will self prime in all but the most weird circumstances.

The engine mounted pump on a naa and hundred / thousand series has a bleed plug on it.. dribble some oil in there nad then close up when it pumps oil.

Since there is no mid 50's N.. you really need to identify what tractor you have before you start trying to fix it.

Just for your info. There is no mid 50s 9N. They where made from 1939 to 1942, then they made the 2N from 1942 till 1948, in 1948 they started makeing the 8N and made it till 1952, in 1953 they came out with the Jubilee. A 9N and 2N will have a 3 speed tranny. The 8N has a 4 speed tranny. All of them need to have the PTO engaged for the 3 point to work and also have the clutch pedel up. When they started to make the NAA/Jubilee they made the 3 point live

You might consider a shop manual or an I&T manual for your tractor. In addition, I believe there is a video available on the three point system repair, but I haven't viewed it. I rebuilt the lift on my Ferguson using an I&T manual and it is very similar to the Ford you have. Also have a look at this:
