WWW.jdheritage.net is where I got my service manual for John Deere Dealers. Mine is for late styled "B" and has 422 pages. I see the only one for the "A" is what they call "general" and covers a lot of models and only has 212 pages so I can't say how much detail it goes into. Don't rely on IT manuals or what they call " shop manuals" they can be pretty general. They even say in their info that they were only able to get complete reprints for some models.I can tell you, the one for the "B"(422 pages) is complete. It doesn't look to me like the "A" was quite that lucky. I guess, keep looking and asking because what you have now ain't gonna cut it if you go very deep as far as repairs and adjustments. The one for "B" is pn.JD SM 2004. Post the ? on the JD site about manuals for the "A" and they may be of some help. Also read this months Green Magazine, there is a clutch article in there that is pretty imformative too.

Thanks for your help. I spoke with a JD mechanic, from a local JD dealership, and he helped me out with some verbal instructions. I also ordered the "operating bolt" that needed replaced at a cost of $61.00 (ouch!). Do you have any suggestions on cheaper parts suppliers that I can contact?

Well, I finally got my new operating bolt but now I can"t remove the pulley brake assembly to insert the bolt behind the pulley wheel. Do I have to use a hammer and beat the fork shaft up and out of the fork bearing? In my shop manual it appears that there is asnap ring that may be holding this shaft in-place. It appears that if I can push this fork shaft up and out of the fork bearing, then I could pull off the fork bearing easily. Any suggestions?

You need to remove 4 bolts that hold the housing on. You do not need to take the fork shaft out of the housing. The fork and pulley brake will pull out from the front releasing your pulley. If want more help my E-mail is open. Ron Mn.

Thank you for helping me! I have removed all (4) bolts from the fork cover (where the fork shaft slides thru) and it doesn't slide off. I think that the fork shaft is threaded thru fork itself. Any thoughts?

The fork that operates the clutch is U shaped and will slide off to the front. As Mike M said you have to wiggle it around some. May even use a pry bar to work it free. As stated before the clutch fork housing and the parts connected to this assembly come out together. I've had a few apart and have had good success. One thing ,you may need to keep your pulley pushed toward the crank case when you pull out the fork assembly. Let me know if this helps. Ron Mn.
