I recently bought a new temp gage for my 55 ford 960 tractor(172cu in 4 cyl gas engine). It came with two bushings (see pic). They look like some kind of compression bushing. Can anyone tell me if I need them, if so where they go, and I assume only 1 would be used? Maybe not? Any help appreciated.

So you"re saying that it IS a compression fitting. You Install a bushing on the bulb with the large diameter of the bushing facing the engine and the small opening facing the gauge. I wonder why they give you two of them? Maybe in case you need to reinstall the gage at some point and thus use a fresh bushing?

You have it back wards the larger end goes towards the gauge line and the smaller goes to the engine. The sender unit has that lip on it and the bigger part of the ring goes to that lip to make it seal better. I've had some of these things where I needed both of them to get it to tighten up like it should and you may find one is smaller then the other so they will fit togeather, but you may not find that either

That makes more sense. That"s how I was originally envisioning, but wasn"t sure. Thank you.

You put one on the end of the probe with the big part away from the end going in the engine.
