48A Ring Gaps?

The Manuals say the "Compression Ring End Gap" should be 0.039" - 0.053" and the "Oil Ring End Gap should be 0.028" - 0.040". These measurements would be installed in the cylinder and are the dimension between the ends of the Rings, right?

Where I am not as sure is the "Suggested Maximum Ring Side Clearance"? Spec. is 0.005" for the Compression Ring and 0.004" for the oil ring.

Question is, what exactly is meant by "Ring Side Clearance"?

Thanks for any help,
Sam

To measure side clearance, slip a feeler gauge in between the ring and the wall of the groove, and see what'cha got.

Hey Bob,
So this is the differencein the width of the ring thickness and the groove in the piston that it fits into? Assures a good fit, yet no binding of the ring when installed.

Does that make sense what I said?

Thanks,
Sam
