IH 240U Trans/Diff question

I have an IH 240U that I am presently replacing the clutch and the clutch shaft that runs back from the clutch to the trans because the pilot bushing went south and messed up the end of the shaft. I will be replacing the oil seal in the front of the trans as long as I have everything apart. I purchased the manuals for this model tractor and I was looking at the transmission and final drive service manual. I noticed two things that are puzzling to me. One is a picture that they show of the differential with the top cover removed. I can see some sort of a tube (maybe an oil tube?) that is coming from the front of the diff case and is pointing to the top right side bull gear. What is this tube?

The other thing that I noticed was a paragraph on the last page that says;
"Inspect the hydraulic filter element and compartment for excessive metal deposits. A considerable amount of cast iron filings would indicate a possible failure in the differential assembly. Do not become alarmed when a trace of metal deposits is found during the initial filter change. These deposits result from the polishing of gear teeth and wear-in of other mating parts."

Am I to believe from this statement that the hydraulic fluid and the differential fluid are one in the same? And that this fluid is pumped through the trans/diff and then to the hydraulic piston to lift the rear attachments? I thought that the hydraulic system had its own fluid and the trans/diff had a separate fluid???

Can someone out there please clarify this for me?

Thanks
