My H is a 12 volt system. It was running fine then one day it would not start. I Found the resistor to be bad, and replaced it. the new one let the tractor start one time then got very hot and won't start now. what could be wrong? thanks!

Bucko, if it doesnt start now (cuz theres no spark) the first thing you gotta do is to see if the new resistor burned up to an open circuit condition resulting in theres no voltage at all getting to the coil.

1) With it disconnected measure the ohms across it which should be somewhere around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms i.e. a continuous circuit HOWEVER if it reads an open circuit near infinity ohms its bad and open therefore NOOOOO voltage to the coil to produce a spark.

2) Turn the ignition on and with the distributors points closed measure the voltage with respect to ground at the resistors high input (from ignition switch) n output (to coil) terminals. It should be around 12 on its input but 6 on its output if all is well. HOWEVER if theres no voltage at all on the output (same as voltage to coil) then the resistor is bad n burned open.

Assuming youre using a 6 volt coil which is why the ballast is needed its ohms value ought to be near the same as the coils prinmary winding which is somewhere around 1.25 to under 2 ohms. They must be power rated round 25 watts or more or else they would burn up quickly. It may help to dissipate heat if theres a good solid tight clean mechanical surface connection on the ballast mount to the tractors iron.

Maybe you got the wrong ohms value or inadequate power rated ballast???

Ballsat resister do get hot, very hot. Your problem could be a bad resister, does happen from time to time even when new. You could also have a coil that has gone bad and shorted which would also cause the resistor to burn up faster. By the way for the most part a resister works with any voltage.

Remove resister from tractor and check with ohmmeter. Your new resister is probably a 6 volt sold to you by mistake or the resistance is too low. You will need to get a shop manual or mechanic to determine the proper resistance.

Larry, a resister isn't voltage sinative but it is amp sensitive. You can use a resistor with 1 volt or 100 volts depending on the amp draw. Thats why resistor are list by watts and ohms
