If ya want to clean old pistons up get yourself some Mr. clean or Janitor in a drum and a steel five gallon bucket put about three and a half to four gallons of water in it and dump two bottels in the water then heat the water and keep it hot like 200 degrees and boli some piston soup and in a couple hours the carbon will come off with a littel stiff bristel brush and a old broken piston ring to get into the ring grooves then let them dry and your good to go. Try it you'll like it. Oh yea do it outside because it will SMELL REAL BAD.

I used a broken ring to clean the grooves, and scotch brite pad and motor oil to clean the rest of it. Came out looking good.

An ordinary carbon and gasket scraper does just fine so long as you don't gouge the piston. An old piston ring also does a fine job.
