I have a 1954 Allis Chalmers WD that has a worn ring gear.

Can I pull the engine with a hoist, or do I have to split the tractor to get to the flywheel?

Along with old's advice, remove the angle iron front engine support. At the steering pedestal, unbolt the hand crank shaft support and the pin that holds the spring in place. You'll gain extra wiggle room to move the engine forward and up. Drill a 2 inch channel iron to match the valve cover bolts, weld a lifting ring to it- makes a good hoisting bar.

You do not have to split the tractor to pull the engine. You do need to unhook the steering U- joint and pull the steering wheel back so the engine will clear and pull the radiator also
