Farmall H Starts but quits after about 10 seconds

I just bought an H that I was told needed some carb work because gas would run out the bottom continuously. I took it apart and soaked all the parts in kerosene. The float had gas in it so I replaced it. I drained all the old gas out through the gas line, so I know that it is running out of the tank OK. It will start if choked and then I push the choke in right away and it runs real good for about 10 seconds then dies out. I can not get it to start without choking it even when it is warmed up. I can't keep it running by choking it. In fact it runs poorly if I leave it choke after starting. I can repeat this process as long as the battery will turn it. It seems like it is gas starved once running. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Most likely, it dies because the float bowl runs empty of gas because the supply from the tank to the carb's inlet valve (needle and seat) is restricted somewhere.

The gas slowly flows into the carburetor, and fills the float bowl, then it will start and run until the gas in the carb is used up.

(BE SAFE) Remove the carb's bowl drain plug. There will be a quick flow of about a half-cup or so of gas as the float bowl drains, then a lesser flow, as the inlet valve is flowing fuel.

If this flow of fuel is so slow it won't sustain a running engine, you need to check out the fuel system, starting at the tank, and determine where the restriction is, and fix it.

If gas flow is good, likely you have a spark problem. Connect up a spark tester to one of the plug wires, and watch to see if it continues to have spark, as it is "dying">

Thanks Bob,

I just checked and I have real good flow coming out of the bowl even after it initially drains. I will check for spark next. Another thing that I thought it could be was a float adjustment. Any thoughts?

I doubt it's the float adjustment, as it should at least run, even with the float considerably "off".

That leaves spark, or a plugged passage taking gas from the float bowl to the main jet area.

I took the drain bolt off agin and had no gas, so I took the carb apart again to compare the old float with the new one. They looked to have the same setting, but I noticed the needle was sticking occasionally when I moved the float up and down. I used a Q-tip dipped in Kerosene to clean out the needle and valve that is seats in and now it runs real good. Thank you for the help, you pointed me in the right direction.

You are aren't kidding about doing it yourself! Isn't that why most of us have these old tractors? Now about those lights and charging system.... Thank you for your help and Thanks in advance for the post that has the link to Bob M's Diagrams. I think it may help me out on my next issue.

I have to agree with Rusty, soaking it in kero, diesel or gas is a waste of time and money. They are fuels and fuels and water is what caused the carb problem in the first place. You need to soak it in a good carb cleaner for about 24 hours. Then you also need to use small wire etc to clean out all passages and also air and spray carb cleaner to make sure its good and clean and even then your not always sure/right. If it fires up and runs for 10 seconds or so and will do that say every 5 minutes then you don't have a spark problem but a carb problem

When you say GOOD carb cleaner. I'm sure they all say they are good on the label. Do you have any that you prefer. Thank you for your help, I do appreciate it.

Well Rusty has a sercert one he will not tell me about but I use Berrymans, plus O'reillys store brand spray carb cleaner. I got the Berrymans that is a gallion bucket. It has a basket in it so you can lower the disassemable carb into the stuff to let it soak. Soak it 24 hours, then I use the spray cleaner, air and a tourch tip cleaner to clean out the passages etc.

Soaking the carb parts in kerosene has accomplished absolutely nothing. The only thing you have accomplished so far is to replace the float. Rebuilding a carburetor is not nearly as easy as some folks would have you believe. If you want it done right the first time, have it done by a professional.
